Y4 Friday Blog - 16/05/25
Date: 14th May 2025 @ 3:23pm
Welcome to the Year 4 Blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"
Please note that reading books will be changed when completed. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 22nd May

Geography Fact of the Week!
Mrs. Macdonald (our Geography boffin) has had a great idea! To make sure our knowledge of the world is solid, each class will be spotlighting a different country in Europe.
For this term, we have the country Iceland (perfect, as it links with our new English unit and history topic!)
Each week, we will find and share a new fact on the blog...
It’s the safest country in the world
You may already know this one, but it’s worth highlighting time and time again.
In Iceland, you don’t have to worry about violent crimes. That’s because the country boasts one of the lowest crime rate in the world. For over a decade now, it has always topped the safest countries list. And did you know that Iceland is the only member of NATO that maintains no standing army?
This is thanks to many factors, including a greater sense of equality within the population, which is in turn helped by the small population of just over 333,000. There is a sense that everyone knows each other, which must surely raise the level of trust in one another.

Maths Problem of the Week
Each week, a new maths problem will appear on the blog... Can you solve it?
The answers will be posted in next week's blog!
Previous week's answers...
Bag A contains 2 1/2 kg
Bag B contains 3 3/4 kg
Total = 6 1/4 kg
Our learning this week in Year 4
English
What is a folktale?
A traditional story that people of a particular region or group repeat among themselves.
We have finished our independent writing, and we did it slightly differently than in the past! As a class, we wrote 2 modelled diaries, focusing on King Harald and his desire to conquer Iceland. We then had to write the next diary along, with a focus on Erik the Great, and the bad news he was delivering home!
Maths
Maths has focused on numbers to one or two decimal places. At first, we had to find the perimetre of a compound shape, finding the missing sides before adding them up. It was a struggle! So, we had another couple of lessons on it, to make sure we were all fully confident!
History
Is there a history topic more exciting than the vikings? We don't think so in Y4!
Over the last few weeks, we have been looking at how the Anglo-Saxons were actually invited to invade Britain (completely by accident) and how, after hundreds of years, the vikings then came too. We have also looked at King Alfred, and his slightly suspicious rise to power, before claiming the throne for himself. Today was the best on yet though - we were able to try on, and look at, a variety of different clothing and artifacts... The chainmail was so so heavy!
Have a fantastic weekend!
