Y4 Friday Blog - 21/11/25
Date: 19th Nov 2025 @ 8:41am
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"
Please note that reading books will be changed when completed. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to Spelling Shed.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 27th November

Mrs. Macdonald (our Geography boffin) has had a great idea! To make sure our knowledge of the world is solid, each class will be spotlighting a different country in Europe.
For this term, we have the country Switzerland
Each week, we will find and share a new fact on the blog...

NATURE
The Swiss Alps are high, snow-covered mountains most of which are over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters). The most famous peak is the Matterhorn which is 14,692 feet (4,478 meters) tall, but the highest peak is Dufourspitze at 15,203 feet (4,634 meters).
Scientists are concerned that glaciers in the Swiss Alps have lost a lot of ice coverage in the past 40 years. This may be related to global climate change. Rapid melting of the glaciers could cause flooding to the villages below.
Most animals in Switzerland live in the mountains. The ibex, a species of mountain goat, was hunted to near extinction in the early 1800s. The species has since been reintroduced and more than 15,000 ibex now live in the Swiss Alps. Hikers may also encounter chamois, another goatlike animal, and marmots. The forests of Switzerland are also home to deer, rabbits, foxes, badgers, squirrels, and many bird species.
Maths Problem of the Week
Each week, a new maths problem will appear on the blog... Can you solve it?
The answers will be posted in next week's blog!

Previous week's answers...
If both end up with an equal weight, box B must be almost 10kg heavier, to make up for the missing weight (25g compared to 10,000g)
Our learning this week in Year 4
English

Our second English book of the year is The Firework-Maker's Daughter, a story about a wildchild, who wants to be better than her father!
It is 'Modelled Write' time again!
We have been rewriting The Firework-Maker's Daughter, together as a class. We are following the exact story, but just tweaking certain details to make it our own. For example, we weren't a fan of how the original started, so we changed it. However, we loved some of the phrases used on the second page, so we pinched them all!
Next week, we will be ready for our independent write, where we will use our modelled write to help us write a story about 'The Painter's Daughter'
Maths - Division

Chunking division is now wrapped up and sorted! We will revisit it again before summer, but I think we can definitely say that we have nailed it!
Next, strangely, is dividing a number by 10 and 100, something we all agree is far easier than chunking. The main thing to remember is this... All the digits MUST stay the same! They will be in a different column, their value will be smaller, but the digits MUST be the same! When you are dividing by a power of 10, the number of zeros on your divisor is how many columns your numbers must jump.
Trust us... It is far easier than it sounds!
