Y4 Friday Blog - 26/9/25
Date: 24th Sep 2025 @ 8:27am
Important Information!
This year, spelling practice has moved from Spelling Frame to Spelling Shed. A few parents have been met with an error message when logging into Spelling Frame for this reason. Fingers crossed, Spelling Shed should now be set up, with a working link below. Usernames and passwords are now stuck into Reading Records.
Welcome to the Year 4 Blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"
Please note that reading books will be changed when completed. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to Spelling Shed.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 2nd October

Geography Fact of the Week!
Mrs. Macdonald (our Geography boffin) has had a great idea! To make sure our knowledge of the world is solid, each class will be spotlighting a different country in Europe.
For this term, we have the country Italy - the home of the great Valentino Rossi!
Each week, we will find and share a new fact on the blog...
What a strange shape!
Italy is a boot-shaped peninsula that juts out of southern Europe into the Adriatic Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and other waters. Its location has played an important role in its history.
The sea surrounds Italy, and mountains crisscross the interior, dividing it into regions. The Alps cut across the top of the country and are streaked with long, thin glacial lakes. From the western end of the Alps, the Apennines mountains stretch south down the entire peninsula.
West of the Apennines are wooded hills that are home to many of Italy's historic cities, including Rome. In the south are hot, dry coastlands and fertile plains where olives, almonds, and figs are grown.
A peninsula is a piece of land that is almost entirely surrounded by water but is connected to a larger landmass
Maths Problem of the Week
Each week, a new maths problem will appear on the blog... Can you solve it?
The answers will be posted in next week's blog!
Previous week's answers...
£3.20 is in 10p coins, so £9.50 is left.
Therefore, there are 9 50p coins in the box.
Our learning this week in Year 4
English
Our first English book of the year is Escape from Pompeii, a fantastic and gripping story about 2 friends trying to escape the erupting volcano.
We have been completing our modelled write this week! We have (very successfully!) written our introduction, our build-up, our problem and our resolution for the problem... Honestly, they look absolutely amazing! Next, we need to use these modelled writes to help us write our independent work... The twist - Vesuvius doesn't erupt in the independent piece!
Maths - Perimetre
In maths, we have started our new unit - perimetre
Unfortunately, it isn't as easy as it sounds! We have been finding the perimetre of compound shapes, including shapes with missing sides. First, we need to locate the missing sides. Then, we need to work out their lengths. Finally, we need to add up the total lengths of all the sides. Not easy at all!
Weekly Awards
Meet the Teacher
A huge thank you to all the parents who came to our 'Meet the Teacher' presentation yesterday!
If there are any follow-up questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. The presentation is attached to the bottom of the blog, for anyone who could not make it :)
Safeguarding - morning routine
Have a fantastic weekend!
