Welcome to the Year 4 Blog!

Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.

Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below. Log in details for Spelling Frame or TT Rock Stars can be found on the inside cover of your child's Reading Record book.

Homework

Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"

Please note that reading books will be changed when completed. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.

Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.

Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 1st May

Geography Fact of the Week!

Mrs. Macdonald (our Geography boffin) has had a great idea! To make sure our knowledge of the world is solid, each class will be spotlighting a different country in Europe. Last term, we had Denmark and learned:

  • The capital of Denmark Copenhagen

  • They speak Danish

  • King Frederik X succeed his mother, Margrethe II, to the Danish throne in January 2024

  • The river Gudenå (pronounced Goo-den-o) is the longest in Denmark, running 156 kilometers. It runs through the peninsula Jutland, ending in Randers.

  • The Little Mermaid Statue is one of the country's most iconic tourist attractions (And one of the most disappointing!)

  • Denmark has been named the world's happiest country on numerous occasions, and remains to be very near top of the UN World Happiness Report, they're currently second.

For this term, we have the country Iceland (perfect, as it links with our new English unit and history topic!)

Each week, we will find and share a new fact on the blog...

REPUBLIC OF ICELAND: FACTS

Capital: Reykjavik

Maths Problem of the Week

Each week, a new maths problem will appear on the blog... Can you solve it?

The answers will be posted in next week's blog!

Previous week's answers...

A) The pattern is in lots of 4. Therefore the 48th shape must be a star. If you follow the pattern, the 49th shae would be a triangle, and the 50th would be a rectange!

Our learning this week in Year 4

English

Our independent writing has been finished, rewriting the story of Beowulf, but from the perspective of Grendel!

It was fantastic to see everyone in Y4 taking inspiration from our modelled write, independently choosing to use bits which can be integrated into their stories. I can't wait to read them.

Maths

In Maths, we have zoomed through our unit on 'measuring', learning how to accurately use a ruler to both measure, and draw, a line. After that, we moved into conversaions, converting between mm, cm, m and km, before also converting between g and kg, and ml and l... This has been a very very busy maths week!

PE

Our new PE topic is OAA, focusing on orienteering. As a huge percentage of this relies on trust and navigation, we completed trust tests. We had to guide each other to different points on the field using specific directional language. The twist... the person being directed had to be blindfolded!

Safeguarding - morning routine

If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door/  KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in the morning. If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff, you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school and children safe.

Have a fantastic weekend!
