Y4 Friday Blog - 5/9/25
Date: 4th Sep 2025 @ 4:03pm
Welcome to the Year 4 Blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / times tables and lots more.
Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"
Please note that reading books will be changed when completed. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to spelling frame.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 11th September

Geography Fact of the Week!
Mrs. Macdonald (our Geography boffin) has had a great idea! To make sure our knowledge of the world is solid, each class will be spotlighting a different country in Europe.
For this term, we have the country Italy - the home of the great Valentino Rossi!
Each week, we will find and share a new fact on the blog...
Valentino Rossi
Okay... It isn't very Geography based, but what kind of fan would I be if he wasn't mentioned!
The only rider in history to win 125, 250, 500 and MotoGP™ World Championships, Valentino Rossi dominated MotoGP with first Honda and then Yamaha, taking the crown five times in a row. Overall, he is a 9 times world champion and widely regarded as the greatest motorcycle rider of all time.
In Tavullia, Rossi's Italian hometown, they even have a 46kph speed limit, to reflect his racing number.
What a fantastic Spotlight Country for us to start with!
Maths Problem of the Week
Each week, a new maths problem will appear on the blog... Can you solve it?
The answers will be posted in next week's blog!
Previous week's answers...

Our learning this week in Year 4
English
Our first English book of the year is Escape from Pompeii, a fantastic and gripping story about 2 siblings trying to escape the erupting volcano.
Over the next 2 weeks, we will be diving into loads of different reading skills, ranging from predicting, summarising, analysing vocabulary, and the biggest and most important Y4 skills... Inference - understanding how a character might be feeling, based on evidence from the text.
Maths - Place Value
As always, the first unit of the year is looking at place value, focusing on the thousands, hundreds, tens, ones and tenths columns. At first, we just need to be clear on what each digit in a number represents, but as we go through the year, we will look at adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing these numbers too!
