Y6 Friday Blog - 09.01.26
Date: 8th Jan 2026 @ 2:56pm
Welcome to the Year 6 Blog!
Important Information
As it is the first week back, a new year and a new teacher, I have given everyone an extra week with their CGP booklets. If you have already completed it, good news - you get a week off! If not, don't worry - you have an extra week to get it done. We will go through the answers together next Friday.
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings / homework and lots more.
Homework
CGP booklets - Homework in CGP booklets is really effective because it helps children practise what they’ve learned in class. The explanations are easy to understand, and the questions get a little bit trickier as they go along. It also means children can work at their own pace. Please complete the next page of your CGP book.
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Asking questions improves key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. E.g. "Why do you think the character is unhappy?"
Please note that reading books will be changed when completed. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. Thank you in advance.
Spellings - Please find this weeks spellings below and a link to Spelling Shed.
Please note that our spelling quiz will be on Thursday 15th January

Maths Problem of the Week
Each week, a new maths problem will appear on the blog... Can you solve it?
The answers will be posted in next week's blog!

Our learning this week in Year 6
English

Our first English book of the 2026 is 'holes', a story about a very unfortunate boy, who is wrongly sent to a juvenile detention camp...
This week has been all about reading. We have made predictions about what might happen in the book, based purely on the image on the front cover. These ranged from lizard-infested holes, to a strange underground monster's lair, ready to conquer the world (sometimes, I think it is better not to ask!)
After the predictions, we read the first chapter, making a vocabulary and phrase bank. This will be there throughout the entire unit, giving us an amazing selection of ideas for our modelled and independent write.
Maths - Decimals
What an easy start to 2026! Decimal place value, looking at digits, ranging from the hundreds to the hundredths columns. We began the week by identifying the value of the digits in each column, before rounding numbers to the nearest integer, tenth and hundredth, finishing with column addition and subtraction (also using decimal numbers)
It may sound like a lot in the first week back, but Y6 absolutely sailed through it!
And the best news... Tiny the Turtle is back!!! He has been sorely missed.

Have a fantastic weekend!
