Welcome to the Year 1 Friday Blog!

Each week you will find out about our learning, events coming up, weekly spellings and lots more!

It has been a pleasure to welcome the children back into school this week. We are amazed at how well they have settled in and look forward to the year ahead.

Reading books will be sent home on Monday along with a personalised sheet of sounds for your child to practise.

Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night and fill in their reading record.

Question prompts can be found in reading books, on coloured book marks and in reading records. Asking questions improves key comprehension skills. If your child is struggling to read a word, encourage them to use their phonics fingers to segment and sound it out. Can they spot any digraphs? (2 letters, 1 sound). Once they have segmented the word, ask them to blend it together.

Please note that reading books will be changed on a Thursday and two books will be given to each child to read for the week . Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.

Spellings

Next week we will put our first weekly spelling list and an overview for the half term on the blog. These will be based on the sounds and tricky words we have learnt in phonics that week.

Spelling strategies can also be found in the files to download section.

PE

PE will take place on a Wednesday and Thursday. PE bags will need to be in school throughout the week in case there are any changes to this. Please remember that earrings are not permitted during PE lessons and staff are not permitted to remove them.

End of Day Routine

  • Children will only be allowed to go home with adults listed on the safeguarding form, unless school has been contacted to state otherwise.

  • Children will be dismissed one at a time. Please let the adult on the gate know who you are picking up and they will then call the child.

  • We kindly request that all children are dismissed prior to teachers/ Teaching Assistants being approached by parents.

  • Should any child need to come back into the classroom, we will allow them back into the room after all of the children have been dismissed.

DATE FOR THE DIARY:

Our Meet the Teacher event will be on Friday 11th September at 3pm. I look forward to seeing you there! The information from the meeting will be shared on the class page that day.

Have a lovely weekend,

from the Year 1 team
