Dear Parents,

We have had a busy week in Year 2. On Wednesday, we enjoyed watching an exciting science show in the hall as part of our Science Week activities. The children were fascinated by the different demonstrations and enjoyed learning about science in a fun and engaging way.

This week in our Science lesson, we went outside to explore the school playground and look for microhabitats. The children investigated different places such as leaf litter, tree stumps and under logs to see where small living things might live. Using their curiosity and observation skills, the children carefully searched these areas and then marked the microhabitats they found on a map of the playground. It was exciting to discover how many different habitats exist in our school grounds!

Please see our gallery page to look at some photographs taken throughout the week.

This week in English, we have been learning about the story The Wind in the Willows. First, we 'boxed up' the story by sorting the main events into different parts. This helped us understand the key events that happen throughout the story. Next, we looked more closely at the plot and picked out the most important parts, including the opening, the build-up, the problem, and how the story is solved. This helped us see how the story is put together. Finally, we began planning our own innovative versions of the story. We thought about how we could change the characters, the setting, or some of the events while still keeping a similar story structure.

This week in Mathematics, the children have been learning about division as sharing into equal groups. The focus of the lessons has been on developing a clear understanding that division means sharing quantities equally so that each group has the same amount. The children explored this concept using practical resources such as the base 10 equipment to physically share amounts into equal groups.

This week in RE, the children have been learning about the meaning of different Easter symbols. We explored how symbols are used to help people remember and understand the Easter story. The children looked at a range of Easter symbols, including the cross, eggs and chicks. We discussed what these symbols represent and how they are connected to the Christian celebration of Easter. The class learned that the cross is an important Christian symbol that reminds Christians of the Easter story, while eggs can represent new life. Through discussion and activities, the children shared their ideas and began to understand how symbols can have special meanings for people of faith.

Reading

Please try to read with your child every night. Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence.

Please note that reading books are changed on a Tuesday and two books are given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each Tuesday. Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.
