Welcome to Year 2.png

Dear parents,

It has been a very busy and exciting week in school as we have been taking part in Mental Health Awareness Week.

On Monday, the children were introduced to Mental Health Bingo during our class worship session. Throughout the week, they have been working hard to complete different activities and challenges to achieve a line or even a full house on their bingo boards.

On Thursday, the whole school enjoyed getting active and keeping fit by joining the online Big School Workout with Joe Wicks. The children had lots of fun taking part in the exercises and learning about the importance of looking after both their physical and mental wellbeing.

This week in English, Year 2 have been exploring the story of Aladdin. We have been developing our reading and writing skills through a range of exciting activities linked to the story.

The children used clues from the text to decide whether statements were true or false and explained their answers using evidence from the story. We also practised making inferences by thinking carefully about how the characters were feeling during important events, especially when Aladdin was captured by the guards. The children enjoyed creating thought and feeling bubbles for both Aladdin and Princess Jasmine.

Later in the week, we focused on sequencing the main events of the story. The children created story maps and used them to retell the story to their talk partners using adventurous vocabulary from our lessons.

To finish the week, the children wrote diary entries in role as Princess Jasmine. They worked hard to write in the past tense and included thoughts, feelings and questions to help bring their writing to life.

This week in Maths, Year 2 have been learning how to use the greater than (>), less than (<) and equal to (=) signs to compare numbers. The children worked hard to explain which numbers were bigger, smaller or the same and used the correct mathematical symbols to show their understanding.

We have also been learning about units of time. The children explored seconds, minutes, days, weeks and years and practised thinking carefully about which unit of time was needed in different situations. As part of our learning, the children completed tables by filling in the missing units of time. We were very impressed with their mathematical reasoning skills this week.

In our RE lessons this week, Year 2 have been learning about why the Church is a special place for Christians. We discussed who the Church is special for and explored the different ways people use it for worship, prayer and celebrations.

The children shared their ideas about what they might find inside a Church, such as crosses, candles, stained glass windows and Bibles. We also talked about the different events that take place there, including weddings, baptisms and special services.

The class enjoyed asking thoughtful questions and learning more about why the Church is important to both Christians and our school community.

Reading

Please note that reading books will now be changed on a Wednesday. Two books are given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.

Please ask your child not to bring their own reading books in from home. They are given the opprtunity to select a reading book from our class bookcase. Thank you for your support.

Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence. Please try to read with your child every night.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each Tuesday. Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.
