Year 2 Fire Service Visit
Year 2 had a fantastic time welcoming the Fire Service into school! We learned lots of important fire safety advice and how to keep ourselves and others safe in an emergency.
The firefighters taught us how to stop, drop and roll if our clothes ever catch fire. We also discussed the importance of having working smoke alarms, remembering to get out and stay out if there is a fire and calling 999 for help.
We took part in an exciting role-play activity where we acted out a fire emergency. Some children became firefighters, one child called for an ambulance and others played a family in a house where a fire had started. This helped us understand what to do in an emergency and why it is so important to know our full home address so that emergency services can find us quickly.
A huge thank you to the Fire Service for visiting Year 2 and teaching us such valuable lessons!

Year 2 – Pantosaurus and Keeping Safe
Year 2 took part in another important lesson focusing on the key messages from the Pantosaurus book and song. We explored the importance of keeping ourselves safe, understanding personal boundaries and knowing that our bodies belong to us.

This week in English, we have returned to writing our own innovated versions of The Way Home for Wolf. We have kept the structure of the original story but changed the main character and the animals who help them find their way home.
We have been using the research we gathered for our information pages to add interesting details to our stories and make our writing even more engaging. We have also been focusing on using joining words to extend our sentences and ensuring that we punctuate our writing accurately using capital letters and full stops.
We are looking forward to seeing how our imaginative stories develop as we continue to build on our writing skills.

This week in Maths, Year 2 have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes and investigating their different properties.
We have been learning to recognise and name a range of 2D shapes, including triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons and octagons. We looked carefully at the number of sides and vertices (corners) each shape has and discussed the similarities and differences between them. We learned that pentagons have five sides, hexagons have six sides and octagons have eight sides.
We also explored 3D shapes, including cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, cones, pyramids and triangular prisms. We investigated their properties by looking at their faces, edges and vertices. We discovered that a triangular prism has two triangular faces and three rectangular faces. We also explored how some 3D shapes have flat faces while others have curved surfaces and thought about how these shapes can be found in everyday objects around us.
Throughout our lessons, we have been developing our mathematical vocabulary and practising how to describe shapes using their properties. We have enjoyed sorting, comparing and identifying shapes, using what we know to explain how we can tell them apart.
Well done, Year 2, for being such enthusiastic mathematicians as we continue to develop our understanding of shape.

This week in History, Year 2 have been learning about Queen Elizabeth II as part of our topic on significant individuals. We discovered interesting facts about her life, including her role as monarch and the important events she experienced during her reign.
To help us bring history to life, we imagined what Queen Elizabeth II might have told people about her fascinating life. We then created speech bubbles, sharing interesting facts and information from her perspective.
This activity helped us develop our historical knowledge and understanding of why Queen Elizabeth II was such a significant individual. We enjoyed stepping into her shoes and imagining what it might have been like to be the Queen.

Reading books will be changed on a Thursday. Two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.
*Please note that one reading book has been sent home this week. Two will be sent home from next Wednesday.
Please ask your child not to bring their own reading books in from home. They are given the opportunity to select a reading book from our class bookcase. Thank you for your support.
Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence. Please try to read with your child every night.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each week. Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.
Weekly Spellings
Please note that there will be no spelling quiz on the last day of term (22.10.26). Please ask your child to look at the common exception words shown below .

Individual log in details can be found on the inside cover of reading record books.
In addition to the weekly spellings, please practise reading and spelling the common exception words throughout the year. Regular practice will help the children to become more confident with their spelling .Please see the common exception word list below:
Please take a look at the websites below to help your child build confidence with their number bonds to 10 and 20, times tables facts, and other important maths skills. These activities are a fun way to practise at home and support the learning we are doing in school.
