CHALLENGE

This week in English, we have been building our writing skills by learning how to make our sentences more detailed and engaging. We have focused on turning adjectives into adverbs by adding the suffix –ly (for example: slow → slowly, gentle → gently, careful → carefully). As a class, we created a modelled story opening inspired by The Wind in the Willows. We looked at how using adverbs helps the reader picture how actions are happening. Instead of Toad and his motorbikes, we added our own twist by focusing on electric scooters! The children then used this idea to write their own imaginative story openings, using adverbs to make their writing more vivid.
You can support your child at home by:
-
Spotting adverbs in books you read together
-
Practising changing adjectives into adverbs using –ly
-
Encouraging them to write short sentences or their own story openings

This week in Maths, we have been revising the different methods we use to solve addition and subtraction problems. The children have been practising how to work carefully through calculations and check their answers to make sure they are correct. We have also continued to learn about division. We have explored how to divide by grouping and sharing, using practical resources and real-life examples to help us understand. The children enjoyed making equal groups and sharing items fairly, helping them see how division works in a practical and engaging way.

This week in RE, we have been learning about Salvation and thinking about the question: Why does Easter matter to Christians? We explored the Easter story and learned that Christians believe Jesus died on the cross and then rose again. We discussed how this is important because it shows forgiveness, hope and new life. The children thought carefully about why Easter is such a special time for Christians. We talked about how it reminds people that Jesus saves others and gives them a fresh start.
Reading

Please try to read with your child every night. Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence.
Please note that reading books are changed on a Tuesday and two books are given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each Tuesday. Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.
