This week, Year 2 have been busy researching elephants, zebras and lions. We learned how to find and record key facts about each animal. We sorted our notes under different sub-headings.

We also practised using commas in lists, for example: Elephants, zebras and lions are fascinating animals.

In our grammar work, we learned how to make singular nouns plural by adding -s and -es. For example: lion → lions and box → boxes.

This week in maths, we have been focusing on adding and subtracting multiples of 10 to and from two-digit numbers.

We have been using our understanding of place value to recognise what happens when we add or subtract tens. We learned that when we add or take away a multiple of 10, the ones digit stays the same, while the tens digit changes.

For example:

  • 42 + 30 = 72
  • 65 + 20 = 85
  • 78 - 40 = 38
  • 93 - 20 = 73

We used tens frames, place value equipment, number lines and mental strategies to help us solve calculations. We also explained our methods and checked our answers carefully.

Year 2 have been learning about everyday materials. We explored our classroom and outdoor areas to find objects made from plastic, wood, metal, glass, fabric and paper.

We compared different materials and discussed their suitability for different objects. We thought about which materials are better for inside or outside and why.

We discovered that some materials are more suitable for outdoor use because they are strong, waterproof or durable, while other materials are better suited to indoor objects.

We had lots of fun being material detectives and explaining why different materials are chosen for different purposes.

Reading books will be changed on a Wednesday. Two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.

*Please note that one reading book has been sent home this week. Two will be sent home from next Wednesday.

Please ask your child not to bring their own reading books in from home. They are given the opportunity to select a reading book from our class bookcase. Thank you for your support.

Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence. Please try to read with your child every night.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each week. Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.

Please take a look at the websites below to help your child build confidence with their number bonds to 10 and 20, times tables facts, and other important maths skills. These activities are a fun way to practise at home and support the learning we are doing in school.
