This week in English, we created our own story maps inspired by The Way Home for Wolf. We kept the savanna as our setting and chose a main character: a lion, elephant or zebra. We then selected other animals from the savanna to help our character find their way home. We shared our ideas and talked through our story plans with a talk partner, ready to write our own innovated stories.

In our maths lessons this week, we learned how to arrange equal groups into arrays and use them to write multiplication sentences. We used counters and repeated addition to help us understand multiplication, identifying how many items were in each group and how many equal groups there were. We then used our arrays to calculate the total and represent our learning using multiplication sentences.

In RE, we have been learning about the Bible and how it is divided into the Old Testament and the New Testament. We explored important Bible stories and discussed why they are meaningful to Christians. We also thought about why holy books are important to people of faith, how they are treated with respect and what makes them different from other books.

Black History Month

As part of our Black History Month learning, Year 2 have been finding out about the inspiring life of Floella Benjamin. We learned that Floella was born in Trinidad and moved to England with her family when she was a child. She faced many challenges when she first arrived, but she showed great courage, determination and kindness.
We discovered that Floella Benjamin became a well-known television presenter, actress, writer and campaigner. Many people remember her from the children's television programme Play School. She worked hard to achieve her dreams and has spent her life helping and inspiring others.
The children enjoyed listening to Floella's story and discussing the importance of treating everyone with respect and fairness. We talked about how resilience means never giving up, even when things are difficult. Floella's journey taught us that we should be proud of who we are and believe in ourselves.

Reading books will be changed on a Thursday. Two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.
*Please note that one reading book has been sent home this week. Two will be sent home from next Wednesday.
Please ask your child not to bring their own reading books in from home. They are given the opportunity to select a reading book from our class bookcase. Thank you for your support.
Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence. Please try to read with your child every night.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each week. Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.
Weekly Spellings
Please note that there will be no spelling quiz during the first week of Autumn Term 2. A new spelling programme will be added to the blog on 6.11.26.

Individual log in details can be found on the inside cover of reading record books.
In addition to the weekly spellings, please practise reading and spelling the common exception words throughout the year. Regular practice will help the children to become more confident with their spelling .Please see the common exception word list below:
Please take a look at the websites below to help your child build confidence with their number bonds to 10 and 20, times tables facts, and other important maths skills. These activities are a fun way to practise at home and support the learning we are doing in school.
