 Walk with a Wolf

This week in English, we have been learning all about wolves while developing our non-fiction reading and writing skills.

Retrieval Skills

We started by exploring Walk with a Wolf by Janni Howker. We discussed what type of book it is and identified some of the features we might find in a non-fiction text, including a contents page, index, glossary, headings and labelled diagrams.

We then practised using our retrieval skills to find answers to questions about wolves. The children learnt that they need to look carefully through the text and find the information they need rather than relying on what they already know.

New Vocabulary

We continued reading about wolves and collected some interesting new vocabulary. We explored words such as alpha, prey and domestic and worked hard to match each word to its correct definition.

We also discussed how a glossary can help us understand unfamiliar words in a non-fiction book.

True or False?

Next, we used Wolves – Usborne Beginners to practise finding evidence in a text. The children had to return to the text to prove their answers, helping them understand the importance of using evidence when reading.

This week in Maths, we have been learning about mass and comparing the weight of different objects. We have explored how to measure mass using grams (g) and kilograms (kg) and discussed when each unit is appropriate.

We have practised comparing objects using the stem sentences “___ is heavier than ___” and “___ is lighter than ___”. Through practical activities, we have made predictions, compared measurements and explained how we know which objects are heavier or lighter.

This week, we have been learning all about Rosa Parks and an important moment in history. We found out about the unfair rules that people had to follow and how Rosa Parks bravely stood up for what she believed was right.

We listened to the story of Rosa Parks and talked about how she might have been feeling when she was asked to give up her seat on the bus. Then, the children became Rosa Parks! They imagined that they were sitting on the bus on that important day. They thought carefully about what they could see, hear, feel and think. Everyone worked hard to write a diary account about their day.

Reading books will be changed on a Wednesday. Two books will be given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.

*Please note that one reading book has been sent home this week. Two will be sent home from next Wednesday.

Please ask your child not to bring their own reading books in from home. They are given the opportunity to select a reading book from our class bookcase. Thank you for your support.

Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence. Please try to read with your child every night.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each week (day to be confirmed). Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.

Please take a look at the websites below to help your child build confidence with their number bonds to 10 and 20, times tables facts, and other important maths skills. These activities are a fun way to practise at home and support the learning we are doing in school.
