Challenge
Example of a bar model used to find a half of 12 (two equal parts needed- the denominator of 1/2 is 2).
Sofia has used a bar model and counters to find ½ of 12

Draw a bar model to help you with the challenge below. Hint - you will need three equal parts on your bar model.
The castle cook baked 36 cupcakes.
He shared them equally between 3 tables.
- Draw a bar model.
- How many cupcakes are on each table?
- Explain how your bar model helped you find the answer.
Reasoning Question:
Sam says, "One-third of 30 is 15."
Do you agree? Explain how you know using a bar model.

This week in English, we have been learning lots of skills.
First, we learned how to use expanded noun phrases to make our descriptions more interesting. We worked with a talk partner to describe different dragons, including Armourwing, Cloudjumper, Terrible Terror and Zippleback. We used the word with to add extra information. For example, "the fierce dragon with sharp claws" and "the enormous dragon with bright blue wings."
We also learned how information is organised in a non-fiction text. We looked at an extract about 'Cheepards' and identified different Year 2 writing features. We used a checklist to find:
- Conjunctions (and, but, because, when)
- Question marks (?)
- Exclamation marks (!)
- Expanded noun phrases
- Adjectives
- Words ending in the -ed suffix

This week in Maths, we have been learning about fractions. We focused on finding one-third (1/3) of shapes and amounts.
We learned that to find one-third, we need to divide a shape or amount into three equal parts. We used bar models to help us see how the whole can be divided into three equal parts.
When finding one-third of an amount, we shared the objects or numbers equally into three groups. This helped us understand that each group represents one-third of the whole amount.
We practised finding one-third of different shapes by checking that they were divided into three equal parts. The children then went on to find two-thirds of a given amount or shape.

This week in History, we have been learning about castles. We looked at artefacts from the Norman period and used them to find out more about the past.
We learned what life was like in a castle and discovered that castles were often bustling places with lots of people living and working there. We explored the different jobs people did, including gardeners, cooks, marshals, heralds, messengers and carpenters.
After learning about these important roles, we chose a job that we would have liked to apply for if we had lived in a castle. We thought carefully about the skills needed for each role and then wrote our own job applications.

Please note that reading books will now be changed on a Wednesday. Two books are given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.
Please ask your child not to bring their own reading books in from home. They are given the opprtunity to select a reading book from our class bookcase. Thank you for your support.
Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence. Please try to read with your child every night.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each Tuesday. Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.
