Year 2 blog- 27.2.26
Date: 24th Feb 2026 @ 1:57pm

Dear Parents,
What an exciting week we have had in Year 2! Three beautiful chicks arrived in class on Monday. The children have been so excited to observe them throughout the week. They loved holding them and did so with extreme care. Sadly, the chicks had to go back to their farm on Thursday. We will all miss them! A big thank you to Miss Killingbeck for taking such great care of them.

Please see our gallery page to look at some more photographs taken throughout the week.

World Book Day – Thursday 5th March 2026
For World Book Day this year we invite the children to dress up as their favourite book character. The children will participate in lots of fun reading activities throughout the day and share their favourite stories.
PE Update
As of next Tuesday, depending on the weather, we will be starting our new topic on outdoor playground games. The children are welcome to bring trainers instead of pumps if they wish, as these may be more comfortable for active games. Please note that football boots and astro turf trainers are not allowed.
CHALLENGE

The children were so excited to see a wanted poster when they came back to school after half term. It generated a great deal of discussion, and led us into our new topic of The Wind in the Willows. Throughout the week, we have collected lots of interesting adjectives to describe Mr. Toad's personality and appearance. We have also compared a video clip of Mr. Toad's escape from jail to the same scene read from the book.

In maths this week, we have been learning how to make different amounts using a variety of coins. We have used the part- whole method to help us partition numbers, as well as find different ways to make the same amount. The children have been using plastic coins to help support their learning.

We began our Questful RE learning by talking about celebrations and the children’s own experiences. We discussed when we celebrate, such as birthdays, weddings and special religious festivals like Christmas, Eid al-Fitr and Diwali. The children shared where they celebrate, including at home, at school and in places of worship, and we talked about how celebrations often include special food, decorations, music, gifts and time with family and friends. We also thought carefully about why we celebrate to remember important events, to say thank you, to show love and to bring people together. It was wonderful to hear about the children’s favourite celebrations, as well as seasonal and cultural traditions that are special to their families. This discussion helped us to understand that celebrations are important to people all around the world and are a meaningful way of expressing beliefs and bringing communities together.
Reading

Please try to read with your child every night. Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence.
Please note that reading books are changed on a Tuesday and two books are given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.
