Friday awards 7.5.26.jpg

Dear parents,

We hope you all had a relaxing bank holiday weekend.

Reading Books

Please note that reading books will now be changed on a Wednesday. Two books are given to each child to read for the week. Please write a note in your child's reading record book when a book has been completed and sign the relevant parent signature box. This allows for an easy change as we know if the book has been read.

Please ask your child not to bring their own reading books in from home. They are given the opprtunity to select a reading book from our class bookcase.

Thank you for your support.

This week in English, we have been exploring the story of Aladdin and thinking carefully about his character. We started by looking at a picture of Aladdin and completing a Zone of Relevance activity. We sorted different describing words into groups to decide which ones best matched Aladdin. This helped us to think more deeply about his personality. We then shared our ideas and explained our opinions using the word because.

For example:

  • I think Aladdin is brave because he takes risks.
  • I think Aladdin is kind because he helps others.

We also began to make inferences, using clues to understand more about a character.

Next, we practised using the word if to imagine what it would be like to meet Aladdin. We wrote sentences such as:

  • If I met Aladdin, I would ask him how he felt when he found the lamp.
  • If I met Aladdin, I would tell him to be honest because it is important.

We are becoming more confident at explaining our ideas and giving reasons for our thoughts. We are also learning how to write longer sentences using because and if.

This week in maths, Year 2 have been building on their understanding of fractions, focusing on quarters. We began by recapping what we learned in the autumn term — that a quarter means one of four equal parts.

From there, we explored how shapes can be divided into more than one quarter. The children learned that when we have two, three, or four quarters, we can write these as 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4. We discussed how these fractions represent parts of a whole and how the number of equal parts is key.

To deepen our understanding, we used a range of examples and non-examples. This helped the children to spot when a shape had been divided into equal parts and when it had not.

This week in RE, Year 2 learned about Jacob’s dream from the Bible (Genesis 28:10–22).

We read the story together and talked about what happened in Jacob’s dream. The children thought about why Jacob said, “How awesome is this place!” and discussed what he might have seen to make him feel that way.

The children then created their own drawings of Jacob’s dream. They used their imagination to show what the “awesome place” could have looked like, including the ladder reaching up to heaven and angels going up and down.

Reading

Please try to read with your child every night. Regular reading at home really helps to build comprehension skills, including inference (reading between the lines), as well as improving fluency and confidence.

The children will have the opportunity to change their library books each Tuesday. Please spend time sharing these stories at home and asking about their choices.
