Welcome to the Year 3 Friday blog!

We have had another busy and great week in Year 3, getting stuck into our learning. We are amazed at how well the children have continued to settle in and look forward to the year ahead. We intend to keep you up to date with all the things going on in our class through this blog. Please read the guidance on mornings, home time and safety in PE at the bottom of this page.

Reminder

A reminder that we are looking forward to welcoming you into the classroom for our Meet the Teacher meeting on Tuesday 22nd September at 9:10am. This will be a great opportunity to meet the Year 3 team and find out more about the year ahead. We look forward to seeing you there!

Homework 

Spelling 

Each week, the children will receive a set of spellings to practise at home, along with assigned activities on Spelling Shed to support their learning. The children will be tested on their spellings every Thursday, so we encourage regular practice throughout the week. I understand that the children haven’t been given their login details to complete their assignments online yet, so in the meantime, please encourage them to practise on paper. Thank you for your understanding.

Reading

Reading is a very important part of the curriculum and plays a key role in supporting children's learning and development. This week, the children have been sent home with a reading book to enjoy. Once they have finished reading their book and their reading record has been signed, they can have their book changed. The children have been reminded to let an adult know when they are ready for a new book. We encourage all children to read regularly at home, as this helps to develop their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.

Times tables 

The children will continue to use TT Rockstars to practice there times tables knowledge. The use of times tables is key to the maths curriculum and the children will gain so much from being able to recite their tables at speed.

English

This week in English, we have been developing our descriptive and reading skills through 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith.  We used carefully chosen adjectives to describe our own imaginary dogs before beginning to read the opening of the story. We also watched a short clip of Pongo meeting Perdita and used our inference skills to put oursleves in our charcaters paws. We retrieved key information about the characters and their feelings and used clues from the text and video to make predictions about what might happen next.

 

Maths

Place value

This week in Maths, we continued to develop our understanding of place value. We identified and represented three-digit numbers using part-whole models and manipulatives. We also practised comparing numbers up to 1,000 using our greater than, less than and equal to symbols. We then began learning how to round 2 and 3 digit numbers to the nearest 10. This took a lot of practise and hard work but the children were resilient and determined to acheive this goal. Well done Year 3!

 

Safeguarding - morning routine
 
If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door / KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in the morning. If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff, you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard. 
 
Safeguarding - home time routine
 
At the end of each day, Y4 will line up on the playground football pitch. Each child will be dismissed individually, only when a member of staff has seen the adult who is collecting. If they are signed up for OSC, the children will need to be collected from the front office, so OSC can sign in, and sign out, the children they are expecting.
If you need to speak with the class teacher at the end of the day, please allow them to dismiss the class first.

Safety in PE
 
We would like to remind all parents that for the safety of all children and following guidance from Chorley SSP, jewellery is not to be worn during PE. This includes earrings, bracelets and watches. All children will be asked to remove their jewellery at the start of every PE lesson. This will ensure their own safety during the lesson and the safety of others. If a child is unable to take out their own earrings, adults in school will not be able to do it for them. This will mean they will have to take another role in the lesson such as observing, coaching or officiating.
 
For this reason, if your child is not confident taking out earrings, please do not put them in on our PE days. This year, our PE lessons are on Wednesday and Thursday, however we may also have extra lessons on other days throughout the year.
