Welcome to the Year 3 Friday blog!

We have had another busy and great week in Year 3, getting stuck into our learning. We intend to keep you up to date with all the things going on in our class through this blog. Please read the guidance on mornings, home time and safety in PE at the bottom of this page.

Events:

Bishop's Harvest Obstacle Course

This week the children had so much fun challenging themselves mentally and physically during the obtacle course to raise money for Bishop's Harvest Appeal.

Celebrating Black History Month

This week, the children learned about Black History Month and why it is important to recognise and celebrate the achievements of influential Black people. Each year group focused on a different inspirational individual, including Marcus Rashford, Floella Benjamin, Lorraine Pascale, Harry Edwards, Lubaina Himid and Stephen Wiltshire.

The children then took part in a class fact hunt, working together to discover information about their chosen person and learn about their achievements and contributions. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate diversity, inspire curiosity and recognise the positive impact these individuals have made on society.

Homework

Spelling

Each week, the children will receive a set of spellings to practise at home, along with assigned activities on Spelling Shed to support their learning. The children will be tested on their spellings every Friday, so we encourage regular practice throughout the week. The log in details for Spelling Shed have now been checked and should be working. Next weeks spellings are shown below.

Reading

Reading is a very important part of the curriculum and plays a key role in supporting children's learning and development. This week, the children have been sent home with a reading book to enjoy. Once they have finished reading their book and their reading record has been signed, they can have their book changed. The children have been reminded to let an adult know when they are ready for a new book. We encourage all children to read regularly at home, as this helps to develop their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.

Times tables

The children will continue to use TT Rockstars to practice there times tables knowledge. The use of times tables is key to the maths curriculum and the children will gain so much from being able to recite their tables at speed.

English

This week in English, we completed writing our own stories inspired by The Hundred and One Dalmatians. Using our detailed plans, we carefully structured our narratives and developed our ideas into exciting and imaginative stories. During the build-up, we created suspense by using powerful verbs, short sentences and rhetorical questions to keep our readers engaged and eager to find out what would happen next. Many of us also included a cliff-hanger ending to make our stories even more gripping.

Throughout our writing, we used a range of adjectives and similes to describe our characters' appearance and feelings in detail. We also included fronted adverbials and direct speech to add variety to our sentences and bring our characters to life. The children worked incredibly hard to apply the writing skills they have learned and produced engaging stories full of creativity and suspense. We are very proud of their efforts and the fantastic writing they have produced. Well done Year 3!

Addition and Subtraction

This week in Maths, we continued to develop and solidify our understanding of column subtraction using both 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. The children practised setting out their calculations carefully and using the column method accurately to solve subtraction problems.

We also explored a range of different calculation strategies and discussed which method was most suitable for different types of questions. The children used Dienes cubes, number lines, the column method and mental arithmetic, comparing the advantages of each approach and explaining their reasoning.

Towards the end of the week, the children applied their subtraction skills by using the column method to find the difference between two numbers. They showed increasing confidence in choosing efficient methods and demonstrated excellent mathematical thinking when explaining how they solved their calculations. It has been a fantastic week of learning, and the children should be very proud of their hard work and progress.

Safeguarding - morning routine

If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door / KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in the morning. If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff, you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard.

Safeguarding - home time routine

At the end of each day, Y4 will line up on the playground football pitch. Each child will be dismissed individually, only when a member of staff has seen the adult who is collecting. If they are signed up for OSC, the children will need to be collected from the front office, so OSC can sign in, and sign out, the children they are expecting.
If you need to speak with the class teacher at the end of the day, please allow them to dismiss the class first.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school and children safe.

Safety in PE

We would like to remind all parents that for the safety of all children and following guidance from Chorley SSP, jewellery is not to be worn during PE. This includes earrings, bracelets and watches. All children will be asked to remove their jewellery at the start of every PE lesson. This will ensure their own safety during the lesson and the safety of others. If a child is unable to take out their own earrings, adults in school will not be able to do it for them. This will mean they will have to take another role in the lesson such as observing, coaching or officiating.

For this reason, if your child is not confident taking out earrings, please do not put them in on our PE days. This year, our PE lessons are on Wednesday and Thursday, however we may also have extra lessons on other days throughout the year.
Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.

Have a safe and wonderful half-term break,

from the Year 3 Team
