Homework

Spelling

Each week, the children will receive a set of spellings to practise at home, along with assigned activities on Spelling Shed to support their learning. The children will be tested on their spellings every Friday, so we encourage regular practice throughout the week. I am aware that a few children have been having some difficulty logging in to Spelling Shed. I am currently looking into this and hope to have the issue resolved soon. In the meantime, if your child is unable to log in, please don’t worry. They can simply practise their spellings the old-fashioned way with a pencil and paper. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Next weeks spellings are shown below.

Reading

Reading is a very important part of the curriculum and plays a key role in supporting children's learning and development. This week, the children have been sent home with a reading book to enjoy. Once they have finished reading their book and their reading record has been signed, they can have their book changed. The children have been reminded to let an adult know when they are ready for a new book. We encourage all children to read regularly at home, as this helps to develop their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.

Times tables

The children will continue to use TT Rockstars to practice there times tables knowledge. The use of times tables is key to the maths curriculum and the children will gain so much from being able to recite their tables at speed.

English

This week in English, we have continued our learning through The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith, with a particular focus on villains! We began by reading a description of Cruella de Vil and used our inference skills to carefully pick out clues from the text. The children then used these clues to draw their own pictures of what they imagined Cruella might look like.

We also explored some well-known villains from other stories, including Scar, Miss Trunchbull and Captain Hook. We discussed their character traits and noticed how villains often have unusual names, distinctive appearances and memorable features. We thought carefully about what makes these characters villains and how authors make us feel about them as readers.

Finally, we had lots of fun creating our very own villains! We used some fantastic language skills, including rhyme, alliteration and word play, to invent creative names and gruesome features for our villainous characters. The children certainly let their imaginations run wild, and we had some wonderfully gruesome and terrifying ideas! It was fantastic to see so much creativity, enthusiasm and laughter throughout our English lessons this week. Well done, Year 3!

Maths

Length and Perimeter

This week in Maths, we began our new unit on length and perimeter. We started the week by recapping how to use a ruler accurately to measure and draw lines in centimetres. The children then put these skills into practice by carefully drawing a range of 2D shapes using a ruler.

We had lots of fun measuring different objects around the classroom and comparing their lengths. We then challenged ourselves further by exploring the relationship between centimetres and millimetres and practised converting measurements from cm to mm. The children worked carefully and showed great perseverance when putting their measuring skills to the test.

We ended the week by consolidating our learning and revisiting the key skills we had developed. It was lovely to see the children becoming increasingly confident when measuring accurately and using the correct units. Well done, Year 3!

Safeguarding - morning routine

If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door / KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in the morning. If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff, you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard.

Safeguarding - home time routine

At the end of each day, Y4 will line up on the playground football pitch. Each child will be dismissed individually, only when a member of staff has seen the adult who is collecting. If they are signed up for OSC, the children will need to be collected from the front office, so OSC can sign in, and sign out, the children they are expecting.
If you need to speak with the class teacher at the end of the day, please allow them to dismiss the class first.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school and children safe.

Safety in PE

We would like to remind all parents that for the safety of all children and following guidance from Chorley SSP, jewellery is not to be worn during PE. This includes earrings, bracelets and watches. All children will be asked to remove their jewellery at the start of every PE lesson. This will ensure their own safety during the lesson and the safety of others. If a child is unable to take out their own earrings, adults in school will not be able to do it for them. This will mean they will have to take another role in the lesson such as observing, coaching or officiating.

For this reason, if your child is not confident taking out earrings, please do not put them in on our PE days. This year, our PE lessons are on Wednesday and Thursday, however we may also have extra lessons on other days throughout the year.
Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.

Have a lovely weekend,

from the Year 3 team
