Spelling

Each week, the children will receive a set of spellings to practise at home, along with assigned activities on Spelling Shed to support their learning. The children will be tested on their spellings every Friday, so we encourage regular practice throughout the week. The log in details for Spelling Shed have now been checked and should be working. Next weeks spellings are shown below.

Reading

Reading is a very important part of the curriculum and plays a key role in supporting children's learning and development. This week, the children have been sent home with a reading book to enjoy. Once they have finished reading their book and their reading record has been signed, they can have their book changed. The children have been reminded to let an adult know when they are ready for a new book. We encourage all children to read regularly at home, as this helps to develop their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.

Times tables

The children will continue to use TT Rockstars to practice there times tables knowledge. The use of times tables is key to the maths curriculum and the children will gain so much from being able to recite their tables at speed.

English

This week in English, we have continued exploring villains through The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. We became detectives this week! We explored the difference between facts and predictions when retrieving information. After watching Jasper and Horace steal the puppies, we thought carefully about the questions a detective might ask to investigate the crime. The children then took part in some fantastic role play, taking turns to become detectives and Cruella de Vil. Using their carefully prepared questions, our detectives interviewed Cruella and tried to catch her out by listening closely to her answers and looking for clues!

We then put our poetry skills to the test for poetry day and created our very own villain poems, inspired by You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch. The children used rhyming words and powerful adjectives to emphasise just how nasty, gruesome and unpleasant their villains were! We had some wonderfully imaginative descriptions and really enjoyed bringing our villainous characters to life through poetry.

Finally, we began exploring how authors create suspense and keep their readers on the edge of their seats. We identified some of the key features of suspense writing, including short sentences, questions, powerful verbs and time adverbials. The children experimented with these techniques and began thinking about how they can use them to build tension in their own writing.

We will continue developing our suspense-writing skills next week, putting everything we have learned into practice. Another fantastic week of creativity, questioning and dramatic role play in Year 3 English – well done, everyone!

Maths

Length, Perimeter and Statistics

This week in Maths, we continued our learning about length and perimeter. We started the week by exploring how to calculate the perimeter of different 2D shapes. The children carefully measured the sides of shapes and used their addition skills to find the total distance around the outside.

We also spent some time revisiting fact families with numbers up to 100. This gave us a great opportunity to recap and consolidate our understanding of the relationship between addition and subtraction. The children used their number knowledge to find related facts and worked hard to explain the connections they noticed.

Towards the end of the week, we began our new unit on Statistics. We started by looking at bar charts and explored how information can be presented and interpreted using them. The children practised carefully reading the information shown and answering questions using the data.

Next week, we will continue developing our Statistics skills and explore different ways of representing and interpreting data. Another busy week of Maths in Year 3!

Safeguarding - morning routine

If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door / KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in the morning. If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff, you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard.

Safeguarding - home time routine

At the end of each day, Y4 will line up on the playground football pitch. Each child will be dismissed individually, only when a member of staff has seen the adult who is collecting. If they are signed up for OSC, the children will need to be collected from the front office, so OSC can sign in, and sign out, the children they are expecting.
If you need to speak with the class teacher at the end of the day, please allow them to dismiss the class first.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school and children safe.

Safety in PE

We would like to remind all parents that for the safety of all children and following guidance from Chorley SSP, jewellery is not to be worn during PE. This includes earrings, bracelets and watches. All children will be asked to remove their jewellery at the start of every PE lesson. This will ensure their own safety during the lesson and the safety of others. If a child is unable to take out their own earrings, adults in school will not be able to do it for them. This will mean they will have to take another role in the lesson such as observing, coaching or officiating.

For this reason, if your child is not confident taking out earrings, please do not put them in on our PE days. This year, our PE lessons are on Wednesday and Thursday, however we may also have extra lessons on other days throughout the year.
Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.

Have a lovely weekend,

from the Year 3
