Homework

Spelling

Each week, the children will receive a set of spellings to practise at home, along with assigned activities on Spelling Shed to support their learning. The children will be tested on their spellings every Friday, so we encourage regular practice throughout the week. The log in details for Spelling Shed have now been checked and should be working. Next weeks spellings are shown below.

Reading

Reading is a very important part of the curriculum and plays a key role in supporting children's learning and development. This week, the children have been sent home with a reading book to enjoy. Once they have finished reading their book and their reading record has been signed, they can have their book changed. The children have been reminded to let an adult know when they are ready for a new book. We encourage all children to read regularly at home, as this helps to develop their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.

Times tables

The children will continue to use TT Rockstars to practice there times tables knowledge. The use of times tables is key to the maths curriculum and the children will gain so much from being able to recite their tables at speed.

English

This week in English, we continued exploring The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. We read the next chapter, where Pongo and Missis return home to discover their precious puppies have been stolen! We thought carefully about how Missis might be feeling and explored how similes and metaphors can be used to describe her heartbreak. The children created some fantastic examples and learned to identify the difference between these two descriptive techniques.

We then explored free verse poetry and its key features. Using our previous learning, we began writing our own poems from Missis's perspective, imagining her sadness and desperation as she discovers her puppies are missing. The children challenged themselves to use powerful similes, metaphors and short sentences to build tension and convey emotion.

Another fantastic week of creativity and imagination in Year 3 English – well done, everyone!

Statistics/ Addition and Subtraction

This week in Maths, we continued developing our understanding of Statistics. We continued exploring bar charts, learning how to draw our own and use them to present and interpret information. The children worked carefully to collect data, create accurate bar charts and answer questions using the information shown.

We then moved on to pictograms, exploring how pictures and symbols can be used to represent data. The children practised reading and interpreting pictograms and comparing the information they displayed.

Towards the end of the week, we began our new unit on Addition and Subtraction. We introduced column addition and explored how to set out our calculations correctly, making sure to line up our digits according to their place value.

Next week, we will continue developing our column addition skills and build our confidence with written calculations. Another brilliant week of Maths - super work Year 3!

Safeguarding - morning routine

If you are dropping off your child at the classroom door / KS2 entrance door and need to pass a message on to a member of staff please do so by speaking to the staff member who monitors the door in the morning. If you need to enter school for any other reason, adults can only enter the school building via the main school entrance and seek assistance from the school office team. If you are attending a meeting with a member of staff, you must sign in at the front desk as a visitor and have an ID lanyard.

Safeguarding - home time routine

At the end of each day, Y4 will line up on the playground football pitch. Each child will be dismissed individually, only when a member of staff has seen the adult who is collecting. If they are signed up for OSC, the children will need to be collected from the front office, so OSC can sign in, and sign out, the children they are expecting.
If you need to speak with the class teacher at the end of the day, please allow them to dismiss the class first.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school and children safe.

Safety in PE

We would like to remind all parents that for the safety of all children and following guidance from Chorley SSP, jewellery is not to be worn during PE. This includes earrings, bracelets and watches. All children will be asked to remove their jewellery at the start of every PE lesson. This will ensure their own safety during the lesson and the safety of others. If a child is unable to take out their own earrings, adults in school will not be able to do it for them. This will mean they will have to take another role in the lesson such as observing, coaching or officiating.

For this reason, if your child is not confident taking out earrings, please do not put them in on our PE days. This year, our PE lessons are on Wednesday and Thursday, however we may also have extra lessons on other days throughout the year.
Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.

Have a lovely weekend,

from the Year 3
