Year 4 Blog-Friday 22nd May
Date: 22nd May 2026 @ 3:44pm

Welcome to the Year 4 Friday blog!
Each week you will find out what we have been doing in class, weekly spellings and times tables and lots more.
Reading reminder
We would just like to remind parents about the importance of reading with your child. Reading regularly at home has a huge impact on children’s learning, helping to improve vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and confidence across all subjects. While all reading is valuable and encouraged, it is especially important that children are regularly reading their school reading book so they can continue to build confidence and progress through the book bands. Please also take time to talk to your child about what they have read by asking questions about characters, events, vocabulary and predictions, as this helps deepen their understanding and supports their progress in school.
The multiplication tables check is coming up after half term. Please find below a link to information for parents regarding the check. All the children are working really hard to learn their timestables so keep it up for the final push!
Friday awards
Well done to all those who recieved awards this week!

Homework
Reading - Reading is one of the most important skills for children to master as it unlocks their imagination and allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Please read with your child every night. Remember to ask questions as this will improve key reading skills, such as retrieval and inference. Children should also have their school reading books in school every day so that an adult can read with them.
Spellings - For our spelling quizzes this year, there will be a list of 10 words sent home to learn. These words will all follow a spelling rule that we are learning in class that week. Our spelling quiz will then take place on a Thursday, where children will be tested on those 10 words along with a mystery word from a previously taught week. This weeks words are listed below. You will also find the overview for the year on our Year 4 class page.

Times tables - Times tables are a vital skill, which will be used throughout the year and through the rest of the children's school journey and lives. In order to prepare every child as well as we can, we ask that children log in to times table rockstars as many days as possible each week. On there, the children can practise all of their times tables by playing different games. As you know, children will be tested on their tables in the summer term. Please continue to practise these as much as possible at home.

National Numeracy Day
On Wednesday we celebrated National Numeracy day in our class by thinking about how maths is used in real life. We looked at how maths is used when dealing with money. We did this by planning a school fete where we had to book activities using a budget. The children enjoyed this session and were thinking about cost vs product and saving their money.

English
Explanation texts
This week we have done a modelled write of an explanation text all out sound. We used our knowledge from our science lessons to help us write our explanation text as a class. This then helped us write our independent explanation texts all about the digestive system. We used our science knowledge and what we have learned in English to write our explanation texts and they turned out amazing!
We also did a lesson on poetry and looked at list poems all about things we love.
Maths
Area
This week in maths we have been revisiting area and how we can find the area of a rectiliinear shape if we cant see the squares in the shape. We have also looked at how to work out the area of a shape if it is diagonal and only includes half a square.
We hope you all have a fantastic half term!
The year 4 team!
