Every Friday, the blog will be shared with the class to recap our learning and make them aware of their homework. Moving to online homework has allowed us to become a more eco friendly school. Throughout the week we will be learning about the spelling rule in preparation for the quiz on Thursday. Spelling frame can be used for practise along with the spelling strategies shared on the blog below.

Exploring Themes and Inventions in English Class 🚀📚

This week in English, the children have been learning about the 'theme' of a story. A theme is the main idea that runs through the story. We discussed how themes appear in The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

🌟 Key Themes to Explore:

  • Friendship
  • Family
  • Loneliness
  • Dreams
  • Determination

The children thought about which themes are important in Hugo and which are not. They ranked the themes from most relevant to least relevant and shared their thoughts using Points and Evidence.

Next, we watched ‘The Shirt Machine’. The children looked at the different parts of the machine, like cogs and wheels.

🔍 Discussion Points:

  • What do we learn about the shirt machine?
  • Which part do you find interesting?
  • Why does this part catch your eye?

After that, they drew a part of the shirt machine that interested them, in the style of Hugo. They also wrote a short paragraph on how their chosen part works.

Finally, they designed their own inventions inspired by the shirt machine.

This Week in Maths: A Fun Journey with Numbers! 📚✨

This week, we've explored some exciting maths concepts. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

🔢 Rounding Whole Numbers
Students have learned to round whole numbers up to 1,000,000! They tried different methods of rounding, which will help them understand big numbers better.

⬇️ Negative Numbers
We tackled negative numbers and learned how to interpret them. The children enjoyed practical examples, from weather changes to money matters!

🕰️ Reading Roman Numerals
In a fun twist, we learned to read Roman numerals using the letters I, V, X, L, C, D, and M. This gave them a glimpse into history while working with numbers!

➕ Counting in Decimal Thousandths
Students practised counting forwards and backwards in decimal thousandths, boosting their number skills.

📏 Comparing and Ordering Numbers
Finally, we compared and ordered numbers with up to three decimal places. This skill will come in handy in many subjects!

Jochebed: A Mother's Courage

This week in RE, the children have been learning about Jochebed, Moses' mother. They explored her brave decision to place her baby in a basket and float him down the river. Why did she do this? It was to protect him from the dangers around him, as an order had been given to harm all Hebrew baby boys. If she hadn't taken this step, Moses might never have grown up to lead his people to freedom.

The children expressed how Jochebed must have felt—worried but hopeful. This moment was significant not just in the Bible, but also in showing what a mother would do for her child. ❤️

Did she do the right thing? The children had different views. Some agreed her actions were necessary because she was trying to save her son, while others thought it was risky. This led to interesting discussions about choices and their consequences!

PSHE

🚴‍♂️ This Week in PSHE: Cycle Safety 🚦

This week in PSHE, our children have been learning about cycle safety! 🚲✨ They watched a video about a boy riding his bike to the park and faced a choice: should he listen to his mum’s advice or not?

The students discussed what could happen if he ignored her. This helped them understand why it’s important to follow advice for their safety while cycling and playing outside. 🌳
