Dear Parents,

Welcome to the Year 5 weekly blog! 

Each week, we will update this blog to keep you informed about what we have been learning in class, homework tasks, and any important reminders or updates.

Reminder 

I am looking forward to welcoming you into Year 5 on Tuesday 15th September at 9:10 for our meet the teacher meeting. 

Homework 

This week's spellings are listed below. There are activities assigned on Spelling Shed for your children to complete based on our new spellings. The children are tested weekly on a Thursday. Children have been sent home with a copy of their username and password. If there are any issues, please do let me know. 

Reading

We ask the children to read as much as possible as there are huge benefits to this within all areas of the curriculum. Children can bring their book back into school any day and they are able to change them independently.  Could you please encourage your children to read as much as possible and record this in their reading record. 

TT Rockstars 

Please encourage your child to access their TT Rockstars account and complete tasks and challenges on the website to practice their times tables. 

English 

This week in English, we have continued our exciting work on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The children created detailed setting descriptions based on the opening scene of the story, taking on the roles of different characters to explore their thoughts, feelings and emotions. It was wonderful to see the children using their imagination to bring the scene to life through their writing. Next week, we will build on this work by creating diary entries inspired by this part of the book.

During our handwriting sessions, the children have been exploring a range of different techniques to develop their letter formation and presentation skills. This week, they particularly enjoyed experimenting with mirror writing and enjoyed creating their names using this style. 

 Maths 

In Maths this week, we have continued our work on place value. The children have been ordering and comparing numbers, developing their understanding of how numbers relate to one another. They explored different strategies for identifying the largest number, using their knowledge of place value to justify their answers. We then moved on to placing numbers accurately on a number line and investigating the value of each digit within a number. It has been great to see the children growing in confidence and applying their place value knowledge in a range of activities.

Computing 

This week, we began our new computing unit by learning about how to stay safe online. The children revisited their previous knowledge and discussed the importance of making safe choices when using technology. They then designed informative posters to showcase their understanding and share key online safety messages.
