Dear Parents,
What a fantastic week again in Year 5!
A huge well done to our this weeks awards winners !
School Council Elections
Next week is UK Parliament Week, which means it is time for our school council elections again. Any children who would like to be considered for school council this year will need to bring their speech to school with them on Monday so they can practise delivering their speech with an adult. Speeches will then be delivered to the rest of the class on Tuesday morning, before each child casts their vote for who they would like to represent our class on school council this year.
Science Space project
This half term we are setting the children in year 5 a creative homework activity. The children are going to be creating a space themed masterpiece based on their learning within class. We are then going to show case these to all parents on Thursday 11th December at the end of the day in our school hall. It will be so lovely for every child to complete an activity based on Space. The completed projects are to be brought into school from Monday 8th December. The children were very excited about this project and it will allow them to discuss their learning with parents at home as they create their homework. Below are examples of what the children might want to create.
Bike ability
Next Monday and Tuesday Y5 will take part in Bikeability sessions. Please ensure permission has been given via the QR code on the letter which was sent previously. Your child will not be able to take part without your permission. Children can store their bikes at school overnight on Monday to save bringing back and forth. Children must bring and wear a helmet and long hair must be tied back. Children can wear their usual school sporty clothes for both days, remembering that they will be outdoors for both days come rain or shine – a waterproof coat is essential.
Homework
This week's spellings are listed below. There are activities assigned on Spelling Shed for your children to complete based on our new spellings. The children are tested weekly on a Thursday.
Reading
We ask the children to read as much as possible as there are huge benefits to this within all areas of the curriculum. Children can bring their book back into school any day and they are able to change them independently.
English
This week we have been blown away by the writing in year 5! The children have created their own biographies based on Dorothy Vaughan. We then read the next part of the book and was introduced to a new character - Mary Jackson. The children explored her story and then created a letter of persuasion, asking the judge to allow her to attend school to become and engineer. The children really focussed on the emotion of the character to write in role.
Literacy Kicks
For the past 3 weeks, the children have taken part in Literacy Kicks sessions with Gareth. This week the children had another visitor into class- Rugby referee Jack Smith. The children listened to his story and then had to write an article all about being a referee. The children have really enjoyed these sessions and it has been amazing to see how hard the children have been working on their writing.
History
This week in History we have looked at the most important dates within the timeline of the Vikings. The children then looked at the very first Viking raid and we discussed as a class whether we were for the raid or against it. The children then got to explore the different artefacts we have in class. This was a really fun way to talk about sources and the impact they have on our understanding of the past.
