Welcome to the Year 5 weekly blog!
Each week, we will update this blog to keep you informed about what we have been learning in class, homework tasks, and any important reminders or updates.

Homework
This week's spellings are listed below. There are activities assigned on Spelling Shed for your children to complete based on our new spellings. The children are tested weekly on a Thursday.
Reading
We ask the children to read as much as possible as there are huge benefits to this within all areas of the curriculum. Children can bring their book back into school any day and they are able to change them independently. Could you please encourage your children to read as much as possible and record this in their reading record.
TT Rockstars
Please encourage your child to access their TT Rockstars account and complete tasks and challenges on the website to practice their times tables.
English
This week in English, we have continued our work on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The children have explored the use of figurative language and how it can help writers create vivid and detailed descriptions of settings and characters. We focused on using our five senses and expanded noun phrases to bring scenes from the story to life, helping the children to develop their descriptive writing skills and engage the reader's imagination.
History
This week in History, we have continued our learning about the Ancient Greeks. The children explored the meaning of democracy and learned how the Ancient Greeks were the first civilisation to develop this system of government. We then investigated the different roles that men played within Athenian democracy and discussed who was able to participate in decision-making. This helped the children to understand how democracy in Ancient Greece compares with the democratic systems we have today.
Safety in PE
We would like to remind all parents that for the safety of all children and following guidance from Chorley SSP, jewellery is not to be worn during PE. This includes earrings, bracelets and watches. All children will be asked to remove their jewellery at the start of every PE lesson. This will ensure their own safety during the lesson and the safety of others. If a child is unable to take out their own earrings, adults in school will not be able to do it for them. This will mean they will have to take another role in the lesson such as observing, coaching or officiating.
For this reason, if your child is not confident taking out earrings, please do not put them in on our PE days. This year, our PE lessons are on Tuesday and Thursday, however we may also have extra lessons on other days throughout the year.
