Dear Parents,

World Book Day – Thursday 5th March 2026

For World Book Day this year we invite the children to dress up as their favourite book character. The children will participate in lots of fun reading activities throughout the day and share their favourite stories.

Year 5 class worship

Our upcoming assembly on Friday 13th March will be all about Mother’s Day. To help make the celebration extra special, we are inviting you to share a photo of your child with their mum or someone special to them, that you would be happy for us to include in the assembly. It is always a lovely opportunity for the children to see their special memories displayed and celebrated together.

If you have a photo you would like to share, please email it to [email protected]

Homework

This week's spellings are listed below. There are activities assigned on Spelling Shed for your children to complete based on our new spellings. The children are tested weekly on a Thursday.  Please do encourage your child to log on and practice these words.

Reading

We ask the children to read as much as possible as there are huge benefits to this within all areas of the curriculum. Children can bring their book back into school any day and they are able to change them independently.  Could you please encourage your children to read as much as possible and record this in their reading record.

TT Rockstars

Please encourage your child to access their TT Rockstars account and complete tasks and challenges on the website to practice their times tables.

Updates

Last half term, we explored the text The Boy at the Back of the Class. The children really enjoyed the story and engaging with the characters’ journey. A theatre performance of the story is coming to Blackpool in May, and I’ve added the link below for you if you’d like to find out more.

English

This week, we began our new class text, The Explorer. The children used their inference and prediction skills to identify what they thought the book would be about. We then read Chapter One and learned all about the dramatic plane crash. The children selected a character to write as and described the journey their chosen character had taken. They have also been exploring relative clauses, and I have been extremely impressed by both their understanding of these and their ability to use them independently in their writing.

Maths

In maths this week, the children have been focusing on addition and subtraction. We explored a range of methods to help them solve problems, including bridging, rounding, number lines, and the column method. The children enjoyed trying out the different strategies and deciding which method worked best for them.

This week

This week, Year 5 were lucky enough to spend some time with the chicks that have been living in Year 2. Everyone had the chance to gently stroke them, and we discussed the daily changes that staff and children in Year 2 have observed as the chicks have grown. We also took part in a taekwondo session with Eddie, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Some of our Year 5 pupils were even able to showcase their impressive skills to the rest of the class.
