Year 5 blog 9th October
Date: 8th Oct 2026 @ 9:26pm
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the Year 5 weekly blog!
Each week, we will update this blog to keep you informed about what we have been learning in class, homework tasks, and any importannt reminders or updates.

Well done to our award winners this week!
Homework
This week's spellings are listed below. There are activities assigned on Spelling Shed for your children to complete based on our new spellings. The children are tested weekly on a Thursday. We are so proud of the effort and progress the children have shown in their tests. They are doing a wonderful job of applying their spelling knowledge across the curriculum. Keep up the fantastic work, Year 5!

Reading
We ask the children to read as much as possible as there are huge benefits to this within all areas of the curriculum. Children can bring their book back into school any day and they are able to change them independently. Could you please encourage your children to read as much as possible and record this in their reading record.
TT Rockstars
Please encourage your child to access their TT Rockstars account and complete tasks and challenges on the website to practice their times tables.
English
This week in English, we have continued our work on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We explored what makes a mythical creature and then used our imaginations to create our own. I was very impressed by the creativity and variety of the children's designs.
We then looked at the features of a non-chronological report in preparation for writing our own reports about our mythical creatures. Finally, we explored what cohesion is and how we can use conjunctions to help our writing flow more smoothly and link ideas together effectively.
Below is an image showing two ways we can remember coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Can you remember the acronyms?
Maths
This week in Maths, we have been learning about statistics. The children explored bar charts and line graphs, focusing on the intervals between each point and how to interpret the data accurately.
They then used their reasoning and problem-solving skills to deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge to a range of statistical questions. I was very impressed with the confidence and resilience the children showed when analysing and interpreting different sets of data. Well done, Year 5!
