This Week in English: Exploring Creativity through "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" πβ¨
This week in English, the children have brought their imaginative flair to life! Using the stunning illustrations from our new focus novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, they’ve been honing their predictive skills and delving deep into character exploration.
Making Predictions π
The children were inspired by the lovely artwork artwork in the book, sparking their creativity as they made exciting predictions about the storyline and the adventures that lay ahead for Hugo. Their vivid imaginations blossomed as they envisioned different possibilities, fostering a brilliant sense of curiosity and engagement.
Character Role Play
The children stepped into the shoes of various characters. They wrote diary entries from Hugo’s perspective, reflecting on his thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a way that truly brought the narrative to life. This exercise not only enhances writing skills but also encouraged empathy and a deeper understanding of character development.
Exploring Place Value: This Week in Maths! πβ¨
This week, the children have been discovering the concept of place value! π They are building on their previous learning by comparing and ordering numbers up to 1,000,000!
π’ What Have We Done?
The children have been counting forwards and backwards in steps of 10 and its powers, right up to 1,000,000. This helps them see which digits change and which stay the same as they cross important numbers. π
They’ve also been identifying and estimating numbers on number lines from 0 to 100,000 and 0 to 1,000,000. Using smaller number lines helps them learn how to position numbers on bigger ones. πΊοΈ
They have enjoyed using points like halfway, one quarter, and three quarters on the number line as guides to place other numbers accurately. π― Now, they are even exploring how to find points halfway between these guides to improve their skills!
