Our learning this week in Year 5
Discovering : Our Half-Term Spotlight 🌍
This half-term, we're excited to learn all about our spotlight country Romania! Each week, we’ll share a fun fact about this amazing country. Children may want to get involved at home. If you find out something interesting about Romania, bring that information into school.
Romania is a country located in eastern Europe. It shares borders with Serbia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova. It also has a coastline on a landlocked sea known as the Black Sea to the southeast.
Discovering Myths 🌟📚
This week in English, the children have dived into the fascinating world of myths! 🌍✨
They've explored exciting stories of heroes, learning about the special features that make myths so interesting.
The children also focused on characterisation, discovering how the characters' traits and motivations help tell these timeless tales. From the heroic Hercules to the brave Theseus, the children are finding connections to their own experiences.
This Week in Maths: Adding and Subtracting Decimals! ✨
This week, the children have been getting to grips with decimals! They’ve been adding and subtracting numbers with up to two decimal places, including pairs that have different amounts of digits.
What We Focused On:
-
Adding Decimals: The children learned different ways to add decimals. They practised recalling known facts, calculating things in their heads, and using methods like jotting or written calculations where needed.
-
Subtracting Decimals: Similar to adding, they explored strategies for subtraction. They figured out when to use mental maths or jotting to solve these tasks accurately.
-
Multi-Step Problems: We also tackled multi-step problems, deciding which operations and methods worked best. This helped them see how maths is used in everyday situations!

Learning About the Women of the Bible in RE This Week
This week in RE, our children have been exploring the stories of the women of the Bible. 🌟
They took part in discussions and reflected on important questions like:
- What can I learn from this story?
- Why is this moment significant?
- Why are these women important?
- What values and beliefs guide their actions?
- Did she make the right choice?
- How does this story fit into God's bigger story?
Through these questions, the children learned about the strength and wisdom of these women. They connected the lessons from these stories to their own lives, thinking about how they can show kindness, integrity, and love every day.
